The Truman Show Paper

Austin Truskowski
The Truman Show
Intro to Broadcast A
11/11/10   Period 2

“Good Morning, and if I don’t see ya Good Afternoon, Good Evening, and Good Night” Truman says this line many times trough The Truman Show, this becomes one of his famous lines and the one you remember. They also found a really good place to put it as one of the last lines in the movie. But to have this line in the movie they needed to make a good movie that fit the line. That is why The Truman Show depicts several interesting areas of video production some of them are how the Cameras are used, is the movie Believable, and is the Ending Good.

One of the things that make a great movie is it needs to be visually appealing and that is where the cameras come in to play. When you put the cameras at different angles and different positions. When the place the cameras in high and low places you get different angles, with these angles you can get different shots of people. When you have the cameras at different angles you can look at the actors in different way and see their face even when they are looking down. The cameras that can pan and zoom also help it make it flow because instead of switching from camera to camera you can have a nice steady pan. The cameras move also help tell the story because they can show more things that might be important to tell the story. The different type of camera also plays a huge part in placement. There and button hole cameras that are super small and most people would not see it if they did not know it was there the only problem with them is the are not very clear. They also have full sized cameras that they probably used for the whole movie because the are much clearer and easer to film with. I think they used these cameras everywhere. That is why the cameras play such a huge role in the movie.

The trouble with making a movie or show is it needs to look real you cant make it look fake of no one will believe it. The first thing you need to do is make a set that looks like the real thing. When you need a set like The Truman Show had you need to put a lot work in. Because this movies was about a show were Truman thought he was I the real world it needed to look good. The sets in the city need to look real and be function (if needed). They also needed to make it look like they were outside even though they were in a big dome and the water needed to look like I went on forever. The actors also need to look and act like real people living in the city. If they wanted to make it better the actors could of done more things to make it look real instead of having earpieces they could of just done what they do in real life.  If I was making this movie I would of made the actors look more real. They could of made a more real traffic jam instead of all the cars pulling out at once. They also could have better product placement instead of the middle of the scene, they could of made commercials for the TV on the show and did it that way. That’s is some things that I would of done to add a little more.

I think the end of the movie was strange and there are things I would of done to make the movie end better. But there were still good parts from the current ending. The ending they did was smooth and very simple and an easy way to end. But the ending could have been a little deferent they should of shown him outside the dome and seen if he comes back. I think the movie should have ended where he left the dome and right out side Sylvia was weighting and they hugged and ended the movie. Than they needed to make a squeal where him and Sylvia leave and move to Fiji and live there for some time and come back and have a kid and start the show again. That is how I think the movie should have ended and a new one begun.

The Truman Show depicts several interesting areas of video production some of them are how the Cameras are used, is the movie Believable, and is the Ending Good. But remember, “If I don’t see ya Good Afternoon, Good Evening, and Good Night”. There also is no world like the real world unless you can think of something better.

The Truman Show Outline

The Truman Show Paper

I.               Introduction:
A.   Attention Getter:  Quote, Statistic, Story (No Rhetorical Questions)
B.    Transition to Thesis:  One or more sentences to tie the Attention Getter to the Thesis
C.             Thesis:  The Truman Show depicts several interesting areas of the video production through Camera’s, its Believable, and The ending.

II. 1st Body Paragraph

Topic Sentence:  One of the things that make the movie great is the cameras and how they make the movie look more appealing.

A.   The Camera angles make the shots look better because…

  1. It looks like the shots are coming from different places.

  1. It makes you able to see different parts of the actors and from different angles.

B.    The camera movements enhance the shot because it makes the shots follow the actor.

  1. When the cameras move than the shots are more fluent and not jumping from camera to camera

  1. The camera movement also helps tell the store because it makes the shots follow the people and then they get shots of what they need to tell the story

C.    The type of camera also plays a big part in the show because they can place the cameras in different places.

  1. They have pin hole cameras that fit on a batten and small stuff and that is almost invisible to the human eye so they can place them on people and you would not know

2.  They also use full size cameras with I think is all they used to do the whole show because the smaller the camera the worse the quality

Concluding Sentence: That is why the cameras play a huge part in the movie

III. 2nd Body Paragraph

Topic Sentence:  The trouble with making this movie was making it believable there was a lot of time spent to make you believe it.

D.   The set needs to look real for you to think the show/movie is real.

  1. When they have a set like The Truman Show set everything needs to look real the houses need to be functional.

  1. They also needed to make the sky look real and to create an illusion with the water so it looks giant.

E.    The actors also need to act like they are real people living in this make believe city?

  1. If this was a real show they would be trying to make the actors look more real they could of got rid of the ear pieces and just made them do what they would do in any other city.

  1. They also wouldn’t have all of these random people who come up and say something and some how know who he is after meeting for the first time.

F.    The actor’s actions would of been a lot different if they wanted the show to be more believable.

  1. When Truman is trying to get away they could of found a better way to stop him than to make a super fake traffic jam.

2.  They also would of created a better place for product placement then right in the middle

Concluding Sentence: That’s what makes this movie believable and how it could have been better.

IV.   3rd Body Paragraph

Topic Sentence: The end of the movie I think is weird and they could of made it better.

G.   What is good about the current ending

  1. The current ending is simple and very smooth it is an easy way to end.

  1. They ended the movie on a note that leaves you wanting more so they should make a another movie about what he did out side of the dome and if he comes back.

H.   How I think it should have ended.

  1. I think he should of left the dome and waked into Hollywood and he would be in ahw and then he see, standing in front of him Sylvia and the hug and end the movie.

I.      How the sequel would be.

  1. It should recap on what happen before and the after he leaves and find Sylvia and hugs and then the go explore holly wood.

2.  Then after the see it they both go to Fiji and live there for some time and then the both go back to the dome and have a child to be the next one on the show.

Concluding Sentence: That is how I think the movie should of ended or the sequel should have been.

V.  Concluding Paragraph

B.    Refer back to the Attention getter
C.    Leave the reader with something to think about.

FINAL SCRIPT

With school back in that mean the fall play will start soon. We stopped in the PAC to see how the show is coming.

(NO NATURAL SOUND)

ROB RACHOW (DIRECTOR/TECH DIRECTOR)-
1) What are you doing to prepare for this show?
For this show I have read the scrip many times more than any other show, I have watched the movie, watch the DVD of the last time we did this show. Tech wise we have had a good tech turn out so the set is close to being done and this set is hard because it is a 2 story house on a lazy Suzan.

Becouse this set is so big the tech crew has been working extra hard.

(NATURAL SOUND AT LOW VALUME TO SLIGHTLY HEAR THE TECH CREW WORKING)

VICKI LUSE (TECHIE)-
1) What is you favorite part of the show process?
My favorite part of each show is kind of tied between building and the finished show. The building process is a lot of work but it’s really fun to see the set grow until it’s really cool. Once it’s done it feels good to see all the hard work you’ve done turn into something that other people can enjoy.

(INTERVIEW IN FRONT OF REHERSOL WITH LOW SOUND OF THE ACTORS PRACTICING)

LEAH RIDDLE (ACTOR)-
2) What is your favorite part of the show?
My favorite part of the show would have to be the second act because we turn the set around and then the audience can see all the drama going on back stage.

(CLOSE WITH A SHOT OF THE ACTORS PERFORMING AND THAN HAVE SOMEBODY SAY THE DATE AND TIME OF SHOWS)
